The Cabbage Diet…Does It Really Work?
Okay…I couldn’t take my weight any more. I over indulged during the holidays, which went straight to my waistline. I decided I would try the Cabbage Diet. I’ve done something similar before, but never actually followed the “plan.”
Like any fad diet, I searched the internet to find the recipe for the soup and tips on how to survive on just soup. First misconception! You don’t just eat the soup! That’s right…you get to change up each day with other food items like fruit, veggies…and what for it, beef or chicken! Here is a link to the website I found most helpful: http://www.cabbage-soup-diet.com/
So where do you start?
I made my grocery list and hit the store. Filled my pantry and refrigerator with fruits, vegetables and chicken.
I made the soup. Depending on where you find your recipe, your soup may vary from mine. I added 6 chopped green onions, 2 diced green peppers, 3 diced carrots, 4 diced stalks of celery, 1/2 head of cabbage (shredded), 2 diced tomatoes, 1 container of mushrooms, 1 can of V8 juice (48 oz), and 8 cups of water. I mixed them all in a large pot over low heat for 2 hours. Once cooled I put in 7 containers so I would have soup for 7 days.
Weight –> 165.8 lbs
Today I ate only cabbage soup and fruit. I gorged myself with apples, kiwi and pears. I was craving all the bad stuff I shouldn’t eat, but I made it through the day. I also had unsweetened tea (which sucks, unless you can find a yummy flavored tea) and water. The only exercise I did was a quick walk with my puppy…maybe a mile.
Weight –> 162.6 lbs (-3.2 lbs)
Right on! I lost 3.2 lbs. Okay, I know for sure that this was only water weight…but I’ll take it! Today I ate vegetables and soup…and treated myself to a baked potato with veggies for dinner (per the meal plan). Today was easier for me, maybe because of the high of losing 3.2 lbs in one day. No exercise today. 🙁
Weight –> 163.6 lbs (-2.2 lbs)
Ugh…I gained a pound. NOT COOL! I was hoping that after eating only veggies, soup and a baked potato that I would have lost weight, not gain weight. BOO! Oh well. Today is a combo of Day 1 & 2…I get to eat all the fruit and vegetables I want (skipping the baked potato and bananas). Hoping to see a weight loss in the morning! Walked just under 2 miles with my puppy.
Weight –> 159.6 lbs (-6.2 lbs)
HELLO! Love that scale. Okay, so I am still not happy with the number I see…but 6 lbs gone is amazing! Today is all about eating bananas, skim milk and soup. It is suggested to eat no more than 8 bananas. I made myself a banana/milk smoothie for breakfast (tip: freeze the bananas the night before, then you don’t need to use ice). I ate 2 bananas for snacks during the day and soup for lunch. Dinner consisted of a mini shake (left over from this morning) and a large bowl of soup. I was able to go for a short walk today…just a mile, but enough to get my heart pounding.
Weight –> 157.4 lbs (-8.4 lbs)
Today is the day I was excited for, yet dreading at the same time. Today I got to eat chicken (or beef…but I prefer chicken). I was thrilled to eat my fill of chicken (10-20 oz.), but what I was dreading was the tomatoes. This day I was supposed to eat up to six fresh tomatoes. Well, Houston, we have a problem. I HATE TOMATOES! I decided to try to tough it out and eat cherry tomatoes. I took 8 cherry tomatoes and a half a breast of baked chicken to work for my morning snack. I ate the tomatoes, but I swear I gagged each one down. UGH! Hated it. I refused to eat tomatoes for the rest of the day. Sorry, can’t do it. Oh well. I tried. I also ate the soup for lunch and dinner. (TIP: add chicken to your soup for a change.) No exercise today. 🙁
Weight –> 157.8 lbs (-8 lbs)
Another beef/chicken day and veggies. Well, I had to have a root canal today, so I went for chicken again…very soft chicken and cooked veggies. I ate soup for lunch and dinner again. No exercise today. 🙁
Weight –> 157 (-8.8 lbs)
LAST DAY! Okay, I am thrilled with my weigh loss, but I miss coffee and wine…and I a SICK of soup! LOL. Today I woke up, cooked 2 cups of brown rice and did a quick veggie stir-fry. I ate 1/4 of the rice and veggies for breakfast, 1/4 at lunch and 1/2 at dinner. Plus I had soup at lunch and dinner. (TIP: add rice to your soup) I was so tired from work and sore from my root canal I didn’t get a chance to exercise again. Hopefully I will tomorrow.
Final Weigh In –> 155.8
Total Weight Lost: 10 lbs
WOW! I lost 10 lbs! AMAZING! So, does the Cabbage Diet work? It did for me. Would I recommend it to my family, friends and readers? Yes, why not. HOWEVER…please note that this is NOT a healthy way to live. I have read that you can do it once a month…but why put yourself through 7 days of soup? YUCK. I think it is fine if you need to lose that last 10 lbs for a wedding or maybe the summer. I certainly won’t be doing this diet again any time soon.
I have to say that even though I can eat normally again, this diet has taught me about will power and control. I am not going to eat just because there is food in the house. I am going to eat healthy and when I am hungry.
I still have about 15 lbs to lose. The question is now, how am I going to lose it? Thanks to Tomoson, I received EliteGold Solutions Garcinia Cambogia to test out this month. I will take the Garcinia Cambogia pills twice a day and try to exercise at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes (more than likely I will be walking my dog). I will update you on my progress.
What are your tips for losing weight? I’d love to hear them!
