So All Your Friends Are Having Babies … Should You?
As human beings, it’s easy to compare ourselves with others. We all want to be as successful as our bosses, have a nicer car than our neighbors or be as skinny as our fitness instructors. The grass always looks greener from the other side, and it can be hard to be content with what we have when we are constantly bombarded with images and reminders of the things we don’t.
This desire to keep up with the Joneses is apparent in everything we do, and from the time we learn to crawl, we think that Jimmy’s stuffed animal is better than our own. It’s no surprise then, that when your friends start having babies, the paternal urge might get a little stronger for you.
It’s hard to feel left out, and your friends’ schedules might not leave them much time to spend with you. Their lives are different now, and they might feel like they have more in common with other people who have babies, but that doesn’t mean that you need to jump on the bandwagon.
There have been a few stories in the news lately about high school teenagers forming pacts to get pregnant in order to fit in with their friends, and most people would agree that this is a very bad thing. One school in Memphis is struggling with 90 girls who got pregnant this year, and they even had to go so far as to offer a free day care in order to keep these teens in school. No matter your age though, getting pregnant simply because your friends are will only create more complications rather than solve them.
Having a child will change everything about your life, and it is a decision that will affect you forever—not just for nine months. Sure, you can find some cute maternity swimwear or baby clothes that make everything seem exciting, but come 3:00 am when the baby is inconsolable, you might regret your decision if you aren’t in it for the right reasons. If you are concerned about your friends moving on without you, well, the truth is that they might if they aren’t truly your friend.
Having a baby will change every aspect of your life, and it is something that you should do when the time is right for you. Forget about keeping up with your neighbors, and make sure you have all your priorities in line.
