Q&A with Chelsea Kane (“Riley Perrin”), Derek Theler (“Danny Wheeler”), and Tahj Mowry (“Tucker Dobbs”)
What can we expect besides pregnancy in season 6? Chelsea Kane joked, “That was a big one for me.” She is basically in the belly the entire season! Chelsea did wear a weighted belly during rehearsals and tapings. In the beginning, she discussed with Kat, the costume designer, about the belly. “Well, first of all it was a dream, it was an 11 week pregnancy. But, you know, you look at Derek, his 6.5 / 6.6, and we wanted to make the joke that Riley is having a giant baby. And so, the last prosthetic belly that we ordered is actually what someone would wear if they were having twins.”
“Yeah and I think we kind of dive a little bit deeper into each character. For Tucker, specifically, we find out a little bit more about him and his in a different space mentally than he normally is. He’s not his upbeat self,” said Tahj Mowry.
Derek Theler chimed in, “Danny, he’s trying to handle his pregnant girlfriend, which is challenge enough for most people especially Danny. But and then Ben is kind of searching still for his love that he happened to cross at the end of the last season.”
Riley is not only hormonal and trying to hide her pregnancy, but Brad goes to jail and Riley is trying to defending him. The pregnancy is a hot button issue. “She is worried that once her boss finds out that she is pregnant that she’s just gonna look like one giant case of maternity leave. So, she’s trying to hide her pregnancy and on top of that defend Mrs. Wheeler’s husband in court. So, she’s kind of an emotional train wreck for most of the season.” (Chelsea Kane)
We found out that the little girl on set are actually twins! In the past they got new babies when it was time to start a new season, but these twins have been with the show for three seasons. “They get to grow with us and they’re given lines.” (Derek Theler)
One thing that I noticed with these three actors is that they felt like family. Chelsea even said, “We love our girls so much and we’re super close with their family.” The girls have become an integral part of the show. “They started talking and doing all these things and it’s like we cannot find another baby that does this and says hello or goodbye every time you walk in and out the door. We really fought to keep them.”
Now that they are on their 6th season, they joke about how the lines between their characters and their real selves have completely blurred. They been with the same set of writers for all six seasons, and they have grown into really good friends. They hang out with each other off set… and “often times we’ll come in on Monday morning, you know, sit and having lunch with the writers and the crew. Telling some wild story that happened and sure enough, two weeks later, it’s in the show.” (Chelsea Kane)
This season, they’ll be reaching a hundred episodes and they also just won the People’s Choice Award for favorite cable TV comedy!
Baby Shower Shenanigans
Well, I thought our Q&A was over…but Chelsea, Tahj, and Derek joined us for lunch! We had our very own baby shower to celebrate Season Six! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to sit next to Derek. He is such a gentleman and easy to talk to. We spent our lunch talking about his character and what he liked to do outside of acting. I was impressed to hear that he studied medicine! At one point he was going to become a physical therapist…but lucky for us, he fell in love with acting. He is a very down-to-earth guy and I can’t wait to see what role he lands next (possibly a super hero???).
What’s a baby shower without a few baby games?!?! We all received a clothes pin to wear. If you said BABY, then you lost your clothes pin. I unfortunately lost my pin after discussing the lack of movie watching due to no BABYsitter. Oh well…I missed out on a fantastic diaper changing gag gift. Towards the end of our lunch, we played charades. Chelsea, Tahj, and Derek were such great sports! They all took turns going up in front of us and acting out different baby-themed activities. It was too much fun!
