I love painting my nails…but some days I don’t have the time or patience for the nail polish to dry. That’s why I love playing with nail stickers.
I’ve tried several brands, so when OMG Nail Polish Strips asked me to review their product I couldn’t wait to give myself a manicure.
I immediately called my friend who lives across the street. She has been dying to try nail stickers…so I thought I would treat us both to a MOMMY play date. Katie picked the mustache nail polish strips and I went for the racing flag nail strips (thinking that we could switch one or two…never hurts to mix and match for a fun new look).
OMG was kind enough to send both the mustache and racing flag nail polish strips for us to review.
What’s cool about OMG nail strips is they differ from real nail polish or cheap nail stickers because of their form fitting qualities. They are super easy to apply –> You can tug them and apply them wrinkle-free to your nails. They won’t chip like nail polish and you don’t have to wait for them to dry. You can apply and go! However, if you want them to last longer than a day or two, you will want to apply a clear coat over the nail strip to insure that they last longer.
Here is “how to” apply your nail strips (application instructions):
Step 1 — Fill up the sink with warm water and soak your hands for 5 minutes. Dry your hands and gently push back cuticles. If there is excess skin around the nail bed, remove it carefully. (I feel this is a smart step with any time you give yourself a manicure. The warm water will soften the skin and allow you to push back your cuticles easily.)
Step 2 — Moisturize your hands with lotion and allow the lotion to set into your skin for at least 1 minute. (Not sure why you would want to add lotion or moisturize prior to applying nail polish or strips…but we did it anyways.)
Step 3 — Take a Q-tip to remove any leftover lotion from the nail bed. (I used some nail polish remover to remove any excess oil/lotion. Like I said before I am unsure why applying moisturizer is a smart thing to do before nail strips or polish. From my experience you don’t want lotion or moisturizer on your nails because the sticker/paint won’t adhere.)
Step 4 — Now, take your nail strips and select the appropriate sized nail strip for each nail. You want to find the one that will cover the nail from sidewall to sidewall. DON’T use a nail strip that is too large. You can always trim the strip the scissors to the appropriate width. (I wasn’t concerned if the strip didn’t reach the sidewalls. My thought is when I paint my nails I never get EVERY part of my nail painted…so as long as it looked good I was happy.)
Step 5 — Peel off the clear coating, and then carefully remove the nail polish strip from the sticker backing. (The clear coat came off easy. The nail polish strip also removed from the paper easily, but you don’t want to rush because this is a thin strip and you don’t want it to rip.)
Step 6 — Place the nail strip at your cuticle. Apply it by smoothing the strip down towards the tip and your nail. You can smooth out all of the bumps and tuck the strip into the sidewalls so they nail strip won’t peel up. (I had no problem applying these to my own nails. I was even able to pull the sticker up and reapply when I put it on crooked.)
Step 7 — (Prior to filing I trimmed the excess nail strip so I wouldn’t have to file so much off.) File away any excess nail strip by holding your nail file parallel to the surface you are working on.
Step 8 — (I was nervous to use nail polish remover on the nail strips, but don’t worry…it won’t ruin your nails.) Take a cotton ball and dip it into polish remover (make sure the excess remover is wrung out) and swipe each nail 1-3 times –> paying special attention to the sidewalls, tips and cuticle area. This step is especially important, as it melts the strip to your nails, allowing for longer lasting wear.
Step 9 — Apply a finishing topcoat, and wait 5 minutes for it to dry completely. (I actually didn’t have clear polish…so I didn’t apply a topcoat until 24 hours later.
OMG Nail Strips can be used on any nail lengths or shapes…so if you bite your nails or love to grow them out, then you could have fun giving yourself a manicure! These nail strips lasted about 5 days before they started to peel.
