In order to utilize the Bluetooth capability of this doll, you must own a smart device (such as the iPhone 4 or newer, iPad 2 or newer, iPod touch 5th generation, Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1…just to name a few). Prior to purchasing this doll, I highly recommend checking www.myfriendcayla.com/support for the complete list of compatible devices.
Once you have your doll in hand, you will need to get the app. Search for “My Friend Cayla” on the app market place. Now you need to install 3xAAA batteries into the battery box on the backside of Cayla. The replacement door is screwed in, so you will need a small screw driver. There is an on/off switch located under the battery box.
Now that you have the app and Cayla is charged up with new batteries, it’s time to pair up the Bluetooth. When I first turned Cayla on, it took my phone a while to find the pairing. But once I linked them, Cayla came to life! To start, press “Hello” on the app. Your child can speak to Cayla when her charm light is on. The light means she is listening. To ask her a question press the start button and you can push pause if needed.
Your child can ask Cayla millions of questions…here are just a few:
- What’s your name?
- What’s your favorite color?
- Are you afraid of the dark?
Cayla is a math whiz! Kira was embarrassed to talk to Cayla while I was video taping, so I asked the questions.
Your child can even have Cayla read her a story.
Kira loved hearing the stories! She listened to the dog story first, then the mermaid story. Kira clicked the pages on the phone while Cayla spoke to her.
Your child can play games with Cayla and discover places Cayla has been via her photo album.
I just read this information…and will have to test it out tomorrow with Kira. You can talk with Cayla even without using the online voice recognition. Go to the settings page of the app and select “internet off.” Cayla will still be able to talk, play games, and read stories!
Worried about the internet? Don’t be! Cayla is a safe toy. Cayla’s software system, ViOLET, prevents any conversations involving nasty works or inappropriate topics.
Kira loves Cayla. She is her new best friend at home. She can’t wait to play with Cayla more to see what else she can do!
Things that could be improved upon:
- The dolls hair is thin and pulls out easily. It comes with a brush, but your child needs to be very gentle with the hair. Kira has already pulled out numerous strands.
- The skirt on Kira’s doll doesn’t fit properly. The velcro in the back will not connect.
- The voice is very robotic (but on an up-note it’s sooooo cool that she is interactive.)
