For years I have driven through the town of McFarland without knowing anything about it. When Disney started promoting this movie, I finally noticed the sign on my drive from Oakhurst to Los Angeles. So why is McFarland so special Like any small town it’s very special to those who live in the town, but McFarland is a town where one coach believed in the boys and created a team!
Inspired by the 1987 true story, “McFarland, USA” follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. Coach White and the McFarland students have a lot to learn about each other but when White starts to realize the boys’ exceptional running ability, things begin to change. Soon something beyond their physical gifts becomes apparent—the power of family relationships, their unwavering commitment to one another and their incredible work ethic. With grit and determination, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well. Along the way, Coach White realizes that his family finally found a place to call home and both he and his team achieve their own kind of American dream.
Coach Jim White tried to motivate his football team the value of hard work, instead he got fired. His only option to support his family was to take a job in McFarland. They were the minority. Even though Jim White wasn’t initially happy about his job, things changed when he found out that the boys could be more than just students and farmers.
He took a chance on these boys. He turned them into runners. He took their natural ability and created a strong running team.
The team taught Coach Jim White a few things too…like the importance of family.
As a former cross country runner, I loved learning about how this team came into fruition. I lived in the Los Angeles/Orange County area growing up. The teams that McFarland raced against are some of the same teams I had to run against when I was in high school. I teared up with they won their first race. This is a wonderful, inspirational movie. It’s great how they bring the real runners back to the film at the end. You get to see how this team changed their lives for the better. I highly recommend this movie to everyone! It will change the way you look at the world!
