Summer is almost over and teachers are slowly heading back to school getting their classrooms ready. Here is one of my classroom tips for teachers: Kagan Style Manage Mats!
I adapted this mat from Dr. Spencer Kagan’s cooperative learning group table mats. Manage mats help support cooperative learning in your classroom. I printed off 5 onto card stock and glued them to 5 different color construction paper, then laminated them.
How To: You will need to place the mats in the center of your table pods. Each student will have a number as well as a letter, and they will have two partners – a shoulder partner and face partner. Throughout the day, you can assign students to work with their shoulder or face partner depending on the task and encouraging partner talk/cooperative learning. The numbers and letter assignments can be used for both table group roles and whole class roles (for example, #1’s could be in charge of gathering supplies). I use the letter assignments to help choose who goes first in the partner talk or coaching situations.
