It’s a first grade tradition to make ornaments for our local tree lighting ceremony. Each school in the mountain community has a tree to decorate. This year we made a Popsicle snowflake. The kids are too young to use a hot glue gun, so there is a little prep that needs to be done before the kids get to paint.
You Need (per snowflake):
- 4 Popsicle sticks
- one large paperclip
- hot glue gun
- white paint
- glitter (any color)
Step 1 – Use the glue gun and glue two Popsicle sticks into an X.
Step 2 – Glue a third Popsicle stick on (as shown below).
Step 3 – Glue the last Popsicle stick on (as shown below).
Step 4 – Straighten out the paperclip, leaving the two hooks on the end. Glue to the end of one of the Popsicle sticks. Don’t forget to write the student’s name on the back (the side with the paperclip) prior to painting.
Step 5 – Now it’s time for the students to paint the snowflake white. You will want to sprinkle on glitter before the paint dries. I use a pie tin to capture the extra glitter. Have the student hold the snowflake over the pie tin and they can shake the glitter on top. Have the student shake of the extra glitter.
Step 6 – Hang the snowflake and enjoy! We leave our ornaments on the tree until after Christmas, then the students may take them home.
