As many of you remember, on January 12, 2010, Haiti endured a devastating earthquake. Lives were lost, buildings crumbled…but there was something that did not disappear in that horrifying natural disaster… the creativity of the Haitian artisans and the desire to survive! Even in the destruction and chaos, they still call this tattered community their home. The Haitian artisans continue to use raw materials of Haiti and transform them into one-of-a-kind art. Using media such as oil drums, wrought iron, paper mache and stone…they have turned nothing into something spectacular! Their artwork reflects the rich culture, history and desire to rebuild their community.
Willa Shalit (daughter of Gene Shalit) and her company, Fairwinds Trading, founded The Heart of Haiti Project. Their mission is to connect cultures through business, art and understanding. Willa has made shopping meaningful! Focused on helping out third world countries, she has brought forth artwork, jewelry, linens, etc to the world. In doing so, she has given the artisans of third world countries a sustainable income.
Through a partnership with Macy’s, Heart of Haiti offers artisan-crafted decorative arts and jewelry for sale. All proceeds from sales on the Heart of Haiti site will go back to the community… enhancing an artisan’s family’s nutrition, educating their children, and bringing access to healthcare and dignity.
