Beauty and the Beast is a story that families everywhere know and love. Disney has taken this timeless tale and gave it new life. Director Bill Condon helped keep the tale true to the 1991 animated film. Minor changes were made, but the truth behind the story remained.
The cast in Beauty and the Beast is absolutely fantastic…starring Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s father; Josh Gad as LeFou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Ewan McGregor as Lumière, the candelabra; Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Audra McDonald as Madame de Garderobe, the wardrobe; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster; Hattie Morahan as the enchantress; and Nathan Mack as Chip, the teacup; with Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts. You can read the exclusive interviews here:
Belle is not a Disney princess at all! She is a bright, beautiful and independent young women who cares for her father and looks for the good in others.
“She’s an ordinary girl from an ordinary village and, and I actually that’s very important about her, and she has no aspirations to be a princess. She has no aspirations to marry a prince.” ~ Emma Watson
Maurice is not “crazy old Maurice” like in the animated classic. He is a creator of music boxes. Belle takes on the inventor role in the live-action film…but she invents things to make life easier for herself and her father. She actually invents an ingenious washing machine that allows her to read while she does the laundry. She even takes time to help teach a young girl to read.
Like the animated version, Belle is taken prisoner by a Beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart of the true Prince within.
“It’s her ability to see beyond the surface of things to- and to understand that kind of everyone has a story, and you don’t always know what that story is, and to kind of look deeper into things before you make a judgement.” ~ Emma Watson
The CGI is amazing in this film! The CGI team and the actors worked so well together to bring to life all of the objects in the house. Disney focuses on even the smallest details…the way the dress twirls during the waltz…the fur on the Beast…the characteristics of each object mimicking their human form.
The music is amazing! They kept all the original songs, plus added 3 new ones! I’m sure you will catch yourself singing along.
“Love conquers all, love wins and it’s not about just giving the love but loving yourself too.” ~ Audra McDonald
I hope you fall in love with this movie as I did…It’s a classic tale, reborn…and now my children will grow up learning the treasured lessons learned in this Disney classic.
