If you haven’t heard, Tori Spelling (“Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Tori & Dean: Inn Love”) and Jennie Garth (“Beverly Hills, 90210,” “What I Like About You”) are back together in a new hit sitcom called MYSTERY GIRLS along with newcomer Miguel Pinzon (“A New York Love Story”).
MYSTERY GIRLS revolves around two former TV show stars who played detectives. They may have lost their sparkle since their TV show ended, but not in the eyes of Nick (Miguel Pinzon). His desire to only tell his story to the Mystery Girls brings the two back together. Charlie (Jennie Garth) is now a suburban housewife and mother. Holly (Tori Spelling) is still searching for her claim to fame like she had when she was a television STAR. Together, these former friends must reunite and use their TV crime-solving skills in order to help solve this crime.
The Mystery Girls are back together…
not acting as detectives, but being detectives!
I got a chance to go on set of Mystery Girls last week! It was amazing walking into the studio audience and getting a sneak peek of Tori and Jennie taping a scene. Miguel Pinzon was also on set and keeping us all smiling!
NO SPOILERS…I promise, but we did get to see them film a piece for the season finale!
After watching Tori and Jennie taping, we got a chance to see the process of how the directors have extras walk through the lines and figure out where each actor needs to stand in a given scene.
Tori and Jennie joined us in the audience for a little Q&A.
Did you ever wonder how a show becomes a show…well, first you have to have an idea to pitch. Tori Spelling had just recently done a Christmas movie for ABC Family and she knew they were looking for comedies. She said, “I used to be a huge fan of mysteries in the eighties and my dad’s shows and I loved Remington Steele and I just wanted to pair that with comedy.” So with that inspiration…Mystery Girls was formed.
Who would compliment Tori in this show the best…why Jennie Garth of course.
At the time of casting, Tori was unsure where or what Jennie was doing, but decided to email her. Tori told us, “You know when friends ask you to do favors like, “Hey, I have this thing for you,” you always feel so like guilty asking? So it was one of those? But, I felt like we had a pretty good script to back it up you know.” It made Jennie laugh and as you can see, Jennie accepted!
Now that the dynamic duo are back together in a television series, years after Beverly Hills, 90201, their on stage connection is very visible.
Jennie said, “We have fun. We have so much fun and it’s just really easy. You know we know each other very well so … we’re past all the … awkward getting to know each other and we kind of know each other’s ups and downs, when we need space, when we … need comforting … And we already have that built in chemistry too as actresses.” Tori continued by telling us, “But it wasn’t a no brainer that we could do comedy together, but then when we tried it… we just fit right together and it was perfect. And of course, you know, anyone can do a female buddy comedy, but I feel like the chemistry, like the bond we have, over twenty years of a friendship, like you can’t replace that. I don’t feel like anyone else could really have that back story.”
Jennie Garth seemed really excited about being back in a sitcom. She told us that after doing “What I Like About You”, Mystery Girls was her first sitcom and disclosed, “I really realized how much I loved doing a comedy. And so being back at it is great. And I’ve always wanted to show at this lot so, it’s a like a dream come true for me.” You could see on Jennie’s face that she truly loved being on this show!
Being a group of 22 mommy bloggers and 3 daddy bloggers, we were all interested in how two talented ladies juggled their work schedule with their children’s schedule.
Jennie and Tori both agreed that priorities change when you have kids. Jennie has 3 kids and Tori has 4. When picking a role, Jennie looks for a part that “feels right,” “what works with your schedule,” and “my kids’ schedules.” Tori looks at the material and the character. Tori told us that being on Mystery Girls was definitely a change of pace. She continued with telling us that this is the “…first time I’m acting away from them full time. So it’s been different.” Tori also told us that they both bring their kids to the set and they all play together! “We say we have like a job and a daycare at the same time.” ABC Family seems to be extremely family oriented. It shows in how they treat their cast and the families. What a great job to be able to take your kids to work with you!!!! (Not all of the time of course, but what a BIG plus!)
Key to keeping your life organized…Jennie said to get a good calendar app! “Color code everybody, have everybody color coded and we do that for our family.” Jennie then giggled and continued telling us about how she uses her calendar app to keep her schedule organized. Like many moms, she has to juggle multiple schedules and the only way to keep things running smoothly is to staying committed… “like if you make a commitment we… keep it.” By keeping everyone color coded, Jennie is able to know what’s going on and where her kids need to be. BRILLIANT!
Tori and Jennie have great chemistry on and off the set.
Jennie admitted to being the one who typically messes up her lines. She jokingly stated that she has a very short attention span. She then complimented Tori by stating that having an acting partner “that you can count on is really important.” They both seem to lean on each other and help each other.
We were wondering how they related to their characters.
Tori immediately stated, “Obviously we’re different than our characters? But I think there is a part of both of us in our characters. Like the relationship we have in real life.: Tori admitted that she is very trusting of people in real life and goes into everything with full force. “Jen always kinda steps in and protects me over the years. And I feel like that’s what Charlie and Holly are like too.” Jennie agreed, “I’m…always been like…more of protector, big sister to her. Since the very beginning.” She continued by saying, “I’ve always been a little tougher you know?” [Jennie laughed] “You know I can, I can take care of myself.”
When asked “What’s been your favorite episode so far?”
Jennie really liked filming the retirement home scene. Trying to find the right words (to be kind to the older folks), Jennie whispered, “elderly people” and we all giggled. It’s difficult to always be politically correct and she didn’t want to offend anyone. However, she “just loved it” and meet “some of the greatest people” while filming.
Tori also highlighted the fashion episode…and Jennie chimed in “Oh, I loved that.” In this episode guest start RuPaul is a fashion designer and the Mystery Girls go undercover to help him solve a crime…and what a crime it was… his bag goes missing and he has his debut at his runway show. All of the bloggers got a little giddy when they heard FASHION and RuPaul!
We were all in awe of the bright, vibrant costumes the cast wore!
Tori informed us that the stage design “obviously has very bright colors and the show is a very fun poppy show, and we wanted the wardrobe to kind of mirror that. So visually it was kind of an eye candy culture.” I immediately noticed Tori’s skirt. From afar it looked like squiggles with maybe a hint of a face…but when she got close to us, you could see that the skirt had images of poodles. It was super cute. When I complimented her on the skirt, she told me she loved her wardrobe! (Don’t we all!)
Since this show is kind of like a reunion of Kelly and Donna from Beverly Hills, 90201, we were all wondering if they had any cameos planned for the show.
We found out that Donna and Nat’s characters from 90210 were going to be infused into the “High School Mystery” episode. Tori said that it’s “kind of a wink-wink at Donna Martin graduates and we go undercover back at my old high school, which is West Beverly. And Nat from the Peach Pit, Joey, plays the high school principal.”
Be sure to tune in at 8:30pm ET/PT on ABC Family
Joe E. Tata (“Nat of “Beverly Hills, 90210”)
will guest star on Wednesday’s (7/23)!!!
At this time there are not any other guest appearances scheduled for the show… but Tori told us “I think the first season we mainly we’re establishing the show and the reunion of us from 90210” If the series does get picked up for a second season Tori stated, “we would want to have a cameo or two from our 90210 group stars.” So keep your eyes open for season 2! We all are hoping that Shannon or Luke make a guest appearance!
We wondered who was their intended audience — everyday mom or maybe the younger girls?
Jennie believes that “It just appeals to both of them.” Not only does the show set intrigue for the younger viewers with the fashion, it “could inspire them” or offer an escape “from maybe what’s not a very exciting life for them.” Jennie’s Twitter followers are from all walks of life — teens, working moms, etc.
Tori continued the conversation, “Well we definitely, I mean we try to give them a little bit of both. We have the mom. We have the single girl…We have the guys in the show.” Plus the 90210 fan base! “I mean that’s the great thing is our fans range from, you know, our age to older to now teenagers…” With ABC Family having such a huge following, Mystery Girls brings forth a show for a variety of audiences…from “teens to twenties to thirties….your nineties.” (Jennie) “The elderly.” We all laughed
We questioned the actresses about their best parenting advice.
I completely agree with Jennie, there are “two sides to every coin.” She said, “I believe in structure. I believe in, you know, I’m a little bit strict and a little bit structured and I protect my girls as much as I possible can. I keep them as young as I can for as long as I can. But on the other side of that, people would say, “Oh, let them be free and run and do what they want and stay…” you know I try to blend that and let them be expressive and you know, but I do provide structure and meals together every day and set bedtimes and you know curfew for my oldest and I don’t let them control me. I’m definitely the person in charge.”
Tori said, “I definitely got so much advice when I was, every time I was pregnant that I used to, I was paranoid before. I was like, [GASP] “I’m supposed to do this,” “I’m supposed to do that.” And I realize now with four kids that, just to trust your instincts and what you do, it might not be what everyone else tells you. It’s the right thing,it’s not right for your child, what’s right for their child. So I just try to go with my own instincts. I over-love probably. We definitely talk a lot about our feelings. Because that’s not something I was accustomed to, so I really try to make that a thing in our household that if something is wrong we talk about it a lot. They’re probably sick of me talking about this. But [LAUGHS] I believe in that. And they’re just, they’re really young now. I definitely could be a little more strict.”
Just like any mom, Jennie and Tori try their best to be a mom. We all make mistakes. We all hear that we are parenting wrong. Everyone loves to offer advice, but like Tori said just because it’s right for one child doesn’t mean it’s right for your child. Kids are different, parents are different. You have to find what works for you!
Tori and Jennie only had nice things to say about their 3rd Mystery Girl, Miguel.
Jennie coined the phrase, “He’s our third Mystery Girl.” And she is right! Miguel took his character to the next level and just blends so well with this dynamic duo! Jennie continued and said, “He completes us.” [LAUGHS] But, he’s again, a great partner in a scene, very dependable as an actor, but a lot of fun too just as a person. And we have a lot of fun with him.”
Tori said, “It has to be hard to come into this, because we’ve known each other for so long. And we had just met him… but it wasn’t like that at all. It was as if we’d known him for twenty years. Like we had this friendship that’s just instantaneous and…” Jennie finished Tori’s sentence, “He didn’t let it be an issue.”
