Tune in at 9:00pm ET/PT on ABC Family for tonight’s SHOCKING season finale!
Chasing Life follows twenty-something April, a smart and quick witted aspiring journalist who is trying to work her way up the ladder at a Boston newspaper by trying to impress her hard-nosed editor. When not pursuing the latest scoop, April tries to balance her ambitious career with her family – her widowed mom Sara, rebellious little sister Brenna and her grandmother. Just as things start to look up at work, home and on the romance front with co-worker Dominic, April gets the devastating news from an estranged uncle that she has cancer.
Just a few short weeks ago, I drove from my mountain home to Los Angeles for a fantastic four-day ABC Family, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Hundred-Foot Journey press event. Each day was beyond spectacular. On my second day in Los Angelese, I had the opportunity to sit down for breakfast with some of the cast of the show Chasing Life, including Italia Ricci (April Carver), Haley Ramm (Breanna Carver), Mary Page Keller (Sara Carver), as well as the producers Susanna Fogel (co-writer/producer), Joni Lefkowitz (co-writer/producer) and Sean Smith. You can read my exclusive interviews with Italia Ricci, Mary Page Keller, and Haley Ramm HERE.
Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz
These two young writers have been working together for 12 years! Chasing Life is their first BIG HIT as a dynamic writing duo! They wrote the pilot only to find out after the pilot that one of their friends was diagnosed with cancer. CANCER is REAL! You never know when cancer is going to invade your life…be it a friend, a family member, YOU. We talked to this pair about how the show hits home for many viewers. Cancer has hit each of us in different ways. For me, cancer hit my mother. She suffered from breast cancer and it was scary for the entire family. Cancer doesn’t just effect the person who has to suffer with the disease, but everyone who is involved with that person’s life. Susanna and Joni definitely brought to life a show that is meaningful and honest…a show that helps people face cancer and discuss this horrific disease.
Susanna and Joni have a movie coming to the big screen later this fall called Life Partners (starring Leighton Meester). This movie brings to light their personal story of writing together.
You may recognize the name Sean Smith… he has worked on previous TV hits like Greek and Everwood. Sean Smith was the tenured producer for the show, and you could tell he was excited to talk to us about his part in Chasing Life. Did you know it takes 12 days to shoot one episode? Sean had a passion for this show. He talked to us about the fact that cancer was a subject that many people didn’t want to talk about, so he wanted to help create a “coming of age” element to the show that people could relate to and understand. He wanted the character, April, to show the truth to how cancer has changed her life.
